The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 125 CARDIFF, John Abel “Jack” WWII Jack was born on October 21, 1923 in Govan, SK. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in October 1941 and trained as a Pilot and Wireless Operator before going to England in July 1943 as a Pilot Officer Wireless Air Gunner. He trained flying the Wellington Bomber and the Halifax Heavy Bomber. Jack was posted to 77 Squadron at Elington, Yorkshire. His crew completed forty-two operational trips over enemy territory. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Jack returned home to Govan to farm, married and had two children. Later, the family relocated to Regina where he began a career with the Farm Credit Corporation. Over the years, they resided in Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina and Kelowna, British Columbia where he retired. Jack played an active role in many branches of The Royal Canadian Legion throughout the years. He held executive positions and took an advocate role representing the Veterans. Jack had been a Legion member for more than sixty years in Govan, Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Kelowna, where he passed away on December 27, 2010. CAREFOOT, Leslie Vernon “Les” WWII Les was born on August 3, 1919 in Beverly, SK. He was a student until he enlisted one week after his nineteenth birthday and served from August 15, 1938 to June 14, 1945. He was stationed at Yorkshire, England and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia as Flight Sergeant Mechanic with the Royal Canadian Air Force and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. While in Ontario, he met his wife Jean Bird, got married in 1940 and they had five children. After RCAF, he and other RCAF members owned Matador Farms near Beachy, SK. Les was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Swift Current Branch 56. After farming, he was employed in British Columbia where he drove the World’s Largest Truck called the “Titan”. Les passed away on December 22, 1985. CARIGNAN, Gaston A. WWII Gaston began his army life on July 24, 1941. He received his basic training in Regina. From Regina he was transferred to Curry Barracks in Calgary, AB and successfully completed a meat cutting and chef course. In June 1942, he was transferred to Red Deer, AB where he was in charge of the Staff Sergeant’s Mess until March 1945. His next posting was Petawawa for his overseas training. He received his discharge on December 20, 1945. He was a very active member of the The Royal Canadian Legion Ponteix Legion as an executive member and as a volunteer. Gaston passed away on October 16, 2004.
