The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 121 BUCHANAN, Steward Roderick “Rod” WWII Rod was the second child of Finlay and Kate Buchanan who moved to the Macoun district of Saskatchewan from the south end of the Hebrides (the western isles of Scotland) in 1923. In 1927, Rod began work with a local bank. After war was declared, Rod joined the Navy and worked for a while at Admiralty House in Halifax, NS. He later served on the destroyer Iroquois. At war’s end, Rod began work with Veterans Affairs in Regina, SK where he continued to make his home. BURLEY, Harold Douglas WWII Harold was born on May 6, 1918 in Regina, SK. He enlisted in the RCNVR. Upon completion of training he was transferred to HMCS York then to HMCS Nader. From there, to a minesweeper HMCS Ingonish flotilla leader to escort four ships from the west coast to the east coast via the Panama Canal. After several months he went to minesweeping duty off Halifax, NS and onto convoy duty on the “milk run” from Halifax to Newfoundland to New York and back to Halifax. Next came the HMCS Joliette that did Convoy Duty, then it was back to overseas duty aboard the frigate HMCS Uganda. Harold passed away in 1962. BURNS, Earl William WWII Earl was born on September 24, 1922 in the Chamberlain District. He enlisted in the Army on April 17, 1942. After basic training he was sent to England for more training. He served in the Anti-Aircraft Artillery defending England from German Bombers. He was severely injured when the gun he was operating jammed; he went up to clear it and he suddenly let it go and was thrown to the ground, landing on his back on an iron stake. Because of the back injury he could no longer serve, he was sent home and discharged on February 25, 1944. Earl passed away on March 2, 1996.
