The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 1 Once again Saskatchewan Command is proud to be honouring our Military Veterans in this 10th edition of Saskatchewan’s Military Service Recognition Book. It is the very least we can do to honour the men and women who sacrificed so much so we and generations to come can enjoy the freedom we do. I want to thank everyone who made contributions to this edition and encourage everyone to search out more Veterans that we can recognize. We have only scratched the surface so far. Submission forms are available at your local Legion branches, Saskatchewan Command office in Regina, on-line at www.sasklegion.ca, and a copy at the back of this book. Saskatchewan residents and businesses have been generously supporting this project for 10 years now and I want to thank each and every one of them for their ongoing support. Without you, this project wouldn’t be possible. I also want to thank Fenety Marketing and Saskatchewan Command staff for all you do to recognize our Veterans. The very existence of these books ensures that our Veterans will never be forgotten! At the Going down of the Sun And in the Morning, We will Remember Them ! The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 5 A Message from the Premier of Saskatchewan On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, it is an honour for me to provide greetings for the 10th Annual Military Service Recognition Book. Saskatchewan is proud of our military heritage and we acknowledge our profound debt of gratitude to those who have given so much. We take great pride in today's service personnel for their courage and sacrifice in our defence and in protecting those unable to defend themselves. For more than a century, Saskatchewan men and women have distinguished themselves as members of the Canadian Armed Forces. And, it is with utmost respect that I commend those in uniform, past and present, for their strength, valour and selflessness in serving our country. I am pleased for this opportunity to express the gratitude of Saskatchewan people to The Royal Canadian Legion as the “Keepers of Remembrance”; and, for input from families of those profiled in this extraordinary publication. As a historical resource, this book enables us to meet more personally the military personnel who made immense contributions to protect the freedoms we cherish. Thank you to all of our Veterans for the gift of peace and to each member of the Armed Forces for keeping us secure. We will never forget your unfailing devotion and selfless courage. The Monument also pays tribute to the members of the military who have served, serve today and will serve in the future. The tree’s story began as a sapling planted in 1913 on land owned by the Pawson Family who operated Pawson’s Market Garden south west of Estevan. In 2015 the family donated the 102 year old tree for the Monument. The carving of the Monument by Darren Jones of Rimby, Alberta began in 2015 and the completed tree was moved to the present location in 2016. The Monument depicts battle scenes and service men and women from World War 2. The Queen’s Colour and badge of the South Saskatchewan Regiment are proudly displayed in tribute to the contribution of people from southern Saskatchewan.

The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 13 WHAT THE HECK DOES THE LEGION DO? Veterans Remembrance Community First of all, we want you to know that at the Royal Canadian Legion, veterans are Canadian Armed and Allied Forces personnel and RCMP who have served and are serving. Next, we want you to know that, by observing the Legion’s three pillars—Veterans, Remembrance, Community—Saskatchewan Command, as the Saskatchewan arm of the Legion, is an active presence in communities across the province. But how, you ask? Well, read on, to discover how the head office in Regina works closely with its Executive Council, 171 branches around the province, and over 10,000 members to support Veterans, Remembrance and Community. Veterans Veterans requiring support of any kind can contact their local Legion branch in confidentiality which will put them in contact with a branch service officer. Veterans can also contact the Provincial Service Officer at 306-525-8739 or toll-free at 1866-471-8387. Service officers conduct needs assessments and based on the results, develop a plan for the veteran to move forward which often includes a community and team effort of businesses, health professionals and other service organizations. A plan could include the service officer assisting the veteran to fill out paperwork from Veterans Affairs Canada, the service officer acquiring furniture for the veteran donated by local businesses, and the service officer connecting the veteran to health professionals. Here are some of our programs that your donations go toward so that veterans receive the care, benefits and support that is the mandate of the Legion. Leave the Streets Behind – for homeless and near-homeless veterans. Paws for Veterans – matches service dogs to qualifying veterans suffering from operational stress injuries (OSIs) such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. It also raises public awareness about service dogs and their presence in society. continued . . .

Remembrance Poppy Campaign – The Royal Canadian Legion, since its inception in 1926, has become known for its annual organization of November 11th Remembrance Day services and events, held in many communities across Canada to honour veterans. Along with Remembrance Day is the poppy campaign, which always runs from the last Friday in October through to Nov. 11— this period marks the time when The Royal Canadian Legion distributes poppies and encourages the public to wear them as a reminder of the service given by our veterans. Poster and Literary Contests – Every year, Legion branches offer local schools the opportunity for their students to submit entries in the form of a poster, poem or essay with veterans as the theme. The contests start at the branch level in October, with winning submissions moving up the Legion ladder until finally, 14 entries from students in Saskatchewan are sent to Dominion Command in Ottawa for judging. At this highest level, the winning entries are displayed at the Canadian War Museum from July 1 to May 1 of the following year.
