The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 449 WOOD, Duwane Holden “Bud” WWII Duwane was born on June 28, 1915 in the south of Bengough, SK. He joined the Army during the Second World War on January 13, 1943 and trained at Shilo, MB. He was stationed in England as a Driver Mechanic transporting troops. He was sent to France where he carried food to the front lines. On August 8, 1944, he was wounded and sent back to England. He continued to transport troops in England and after the war, he drove soldiers to the ships that brought them home. He was one of the last to leave. He was discharged on March 12, 1946. Bud received the 1939 -45 Star, France and Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Bud returned to farm in the Hoath District of Saskatchewan until he retired to Willow Bunch in 1974. He was a longstanding member of the Willow Bunch Legion Branch 287 of The Royal Canadian Legion. He passed away on June 23, 1988. WOOD, Lloyd Edward WWII Lloyd was born in 1924. He served as Able Seaman with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve aboard HMCS Unicorn from 1942 to 1945 during the Second World War. He passed away in 1987. WOOD, Ronald Mark WWII Ronald was born on February 7, 1921 in Bengough, SK. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War and took his training at the R.A.F. Station, Nassau, Bahamas. He was stationed overseas in England on August 17, 1944. From there, Flight Sergeant Wood went on many missions over Germany as a Gunner. On a mission the evening of February 20, 1945, his plane was attacked by JA88 fighters and went down near the German village of Sirhenausen. Five parachuted to safety while six perished. As the plane went down in flames, Ronald kept firing, scoring a hit and damaging one of the attacking planes. This is told by his navigator Ronald Johnson in a letter sent to his parents on May 22, 1945. A quote from that letter: “He did not let anyone down - he carried out the job for which he was trained more than magnificently.”
