The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 403 THORSEN, Russell D. “Rusty” WWII Russell was born in 1911 in Paddockwood, SK. He served during the Second World War as a Private in the Regina Rifles Regiment from 1940 to 1946 in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He was the cook for his platoon. On one tragic mission, his entire platoon was killed or hurt in action. He received the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. On his return to civilian life, Rusty became part owner of the Paddockwood Hotel and Pool Hall. He worked as a cook in various mining and lumber camps in Northern Saskatchewan. He purchased the homestead from his brother, Harvey. He lived in the home place when he was off from work in the North. Rusty never married. He passed away in 1971. TONKS, John James WWII John served as a Leading Seaman with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve from November of 1940 to October of 1945 during the Second World War. He passed away on November 28, 2010. TOWNSEND, C. R. “Red” WWII Red served in England, Holland, Belgium, France and Germany from 1940 to 1946 with the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps 8th Recce, 14th Canadian Hussars as Staff Sergeant during the Second World War. He received the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
