The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 363 SMITH, Charles Alexander “Sandy” WWII Charles was born on July 28, 1919. He served during the Second World War with the R.C.A.S.C. 1st Service Corps 31st Company Transport Outfit as Lance Corporal from 1940 to 1945. He passed away on November 1, 1992. SMITH, David Edgar WWI David was born in Durham, ON on May 1, 1897. In 1898, the family moved to Belmont, MB and in 1901 to Alameda, NT, which it now Saskatchewan. At the age of nineteen, he enlisted at Estevan, SK to serve in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, 152 Battalion in Britain and France. On October 3, 1916 he embarked from Halifax to Liverpool, England and was then transferred to the 5th Battalion and arrived in France on November 13, 1916 for active duty. He was reported missing in action on April 28, 1917 and later confirmed that he was killed serving the 5th Battalion. The memorial cenotaph at Alameda, SK, the Vimy Ridge War Memorial in France, and the Saskatchewan Virtual Memorial on the Saskatchewan Legislative grounds all bear his name. His British War Medal, the Allied Victory Medal, the Memorial Plaque and the Victory Cross were presented posthumously to his mother. SMITH, John E. G. WWII John was born in 1923 in Climax, SK. He enlisted in the Army during the Second World War and served as a Private with the A Coy 1st Battalion Black Watch in England and Belgium. He was killed by a German Sniper on September 29, 1944 in St Leonards at only twenty-one years old.
