The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 293 ORAM, Reginald WWII Reginald served in the United Kingdom and in Italy with the Canadian Army from May of 1941 to August of 1945 during the Second World War. ORTMAN, August “Gus” WWII August was born in St Walburg, SK on August 5, 1917. He was the eighth child of Peter and Katherine Ortman. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and became a Rear Gunner and served until the end of the Second World War. He married Irene Henderson in 1942 and they had five children. He was always the family clown and daredevil. He was once dared to heave a snowball at a Mountie’s car. The Mountie stepped out and asked Gus if he was guilty. He later confessed that he could feel the noose around his neck sure he’d be hung. He worked as a stone mason and other construction jobs until his death on November 25, 1983 in Calgary. He is buried in the Veteran’s Section of Gleichen, AB Cemetery. Ralph Ortman was Gus’ brother. ORTMAN, Ralph Paul WWII Ralph was born on March 28, 1916 in St Walburg, SK. He enlisted in the Army during the Second World War in 1943 in Vancouver and received basic and some advanced training in Army Service Corps in Red Deer. He moved from Company to Company teaching motor mechanics. He also instructed driving. He studied electrical and mechanics in Hamilton and taught electrical wiring techniques in Calgary and Regina until 1947. He was serious, hardworking and dependable and the seventh of ten children. He married Marie Legrod in 1945 and they farmed successfully near Ponteix, SK. Ralph was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion until his death and took part in many community projects and services. He always considered St Walburg his real home. He passed away on January 28, 1988.
