The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 221 LONG, Matthew Thomas WWII Matthew was born in 1924 in County Cork, Ireland and moved to Nipawin, SK in 1929. He served on the HMCS Esquimault and HMCS Kuitan from 1944 to 1946 with the Royal Canadian Navy as a Stoker during the Second World War. Matthew passed away in 1978. LONG, Rosco E. WWII Rosco was born in 1921 in Nokomis, SK. He served in the Army with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in Canada, England, France, Belgium and Holland during the Second World War. After the war, he bought a farm through the Veterans’ Land Act and farmed for several years. In 1957, he became Postmaster at Lac Vert and served for 24 years. He joined The Legion in 1945 and served in many offices and committees. He received several awards and medals, one of which was the Meritorious Service and palm leaf award which he received with humility and pride. He devoted much time and research into a “Wall of Honour” that hangs in the Naicam, SK Legion Branch in memory of those who paid the supreme sacrifice. He wrote a book called Life in the Canadian Army. He and his wife travelled back to Europe three times for various celebrations. They are now retired and live in Melfort, SK. LOVE, Ira WWII Ira served with the Canadian Army during the Second World War.
