The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 191 KIRBY, James Howard WWII James was born on September 21, 1919 at his home farm in Hart, SK. In April of 1941, he took basic training with the Regina Rifles, living on Robinson Street and walking to the Armories each day. The night before James was to be put on the train for Ottawa to take the ship to England for the Normandy invasion during the Second World War, he was out with some of his battalion jumping hurdles and James seriously injured his left knee. James was not able to leave Regina, so he was placed on the injured list. He became an Officers Batman at the Regina Base. In August of 1942, James received an honourable discharge from the Army. He moved back to Scout Lake, SK and worked for the railroad. He married and had four children and they lived on his fatherin-law’s ranch and farmed, raising registered Horned Herford cattle. In October of 1979, they built a house in Rockglen, SK. James passed away in 2015 at the age of 95 and is buried at the Rockglen Cemetery. KISS, Joseph Clifford WWII Joseph was born in Plunkett, SK in 1918. He enlisted in the Army and served as a Trooper with the Fort Garry Horse in Canada, England, Holland, France and Germany during the Second World War. He was a driver of Sherwin tanks and he landed by tank on D-Day plus six. He was also at Caen, Falaise Gap, Groningen, Nijmegen, the Scheldt Estuary and was in Germany at war’s end. He was a member of Legion Branch 78 for thirty years until his death in 1994. KLAASSEN, Oliver “Ole” WWII Oliver was born in 1913. He served as a Leading Aircraftsman with the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941 to 1945. He passed away in 1980.
