The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 17 Discovering the Power in Me Creating a Future of Strength and Hope This program is a partnership between Wounded Warriors Weekend, the Pacific Institute and The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command and its Branches. The Discovering the Power in Me program was designed and developed by persons with disabilities, health experts, and the Pacific Institute. Our purpose is to help build hope, strength and resiliency in Veterans, currently serving Military, RCMP, first responders, continuous care providers and their families. We have considerable experience delivering this program in both Canada and the U.S. This program teaches people to manage change, set and achieve goals, be more effective, and to think in ways that create success. The underlying theme is that everyone can control his or her own thought process to overcome symptoms and lead happy, healthy lives. Since the start of this program in July 2013, we have hosted nine seminars: Saskatoon – 5, North Battleford, Regina, Nipawin, and Lloydminster. The branches supplied a safe place to hold the seminars, lunches, comfort food at breaks and a welcome to all participants. I thank our branches on behalf of the participants. The seminars are conducted by Blake Williams, Master Facilitator and Pacific Institute Global Managing Director; Pat Varga, Past Dominion President and Past Saskatchewan Command President; Facilitator in Training and occasionally Blake Emmons, President and CEO of the Emmons Groups and founder of Wounded Warriors Weekend Foundation Inc. It is truly a partnership that is working very well and that we hope will continue. The response from the CF Joint Military Support Unit in Saskatchewan was very positive and as a unit made the following recommendations to the Integrated Personnel Support Unity in Winnipeg: • “Overall we as a team feel that it was an excellent program for both staff and clients as it is a good life coach, excellent transition to civilian and can potentially bridge with other programs for after the military. • We recommend running a separate course for all of the prairie region staff only as it will also help with team building. • We recommend that our clients and their spouses are encouraged to attend and we cover the cost of TD for our members.” These recommendations with hopefully open the doors to the currently serving and about to be released military and their families that we have been aiming for since the start of the program.
