The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 173 JOHNSON, Leslie Gilbert Leslie was born on June 18, 1938. He was a member of the Queen’s Own Rifle and PPCLI and served as a Sergeant from October of 1956 until July of 1977. He was awarded the C.D. and NATO. Leslie passed away on January 18, 2009. JOHNSON, Oscar WWII Oscar was born in 1924 in Ardill, SK. He joined the Regina Rifles and served in England, France, Holland, Germany and Belgium. He married and had five children. He worked for the Saskatchewan Government as a Forest Ranger for thirty-five years. He served two terms as president of the Smeaton Legion Branch 319 and was a member for thirty years. He passed away in the hospital on February 20, 1997. He was awarded the Military Medal. His citation reads: “This rifleman crawled forward the full length of the beach on D-Day under heavy fire, cutting his way through six feet of wire in a position that was directly covered by enemy small arms fire. He then went back and assumed the leadership of the remainder of his section, leading them through the wire into the enemy slit trenches, clearing them of enemy and enabling the remainder of the company to move forward into the safety of these slit trenches. From there he continued to move forward as a sniper, well ahead of his company. The latter was done entirely of his own initiative and he displayed rare courage and resourcefulness; at no time previously had he ever had charge of a section of men.” JOHNSON, Oscar WWII Oscar was born on November 29, 1916. He served as a Sergeant with the Canadian Army from 1942 to 1945 during the Second World War. He passed away on June 20, 1976.
