The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 143 HAZARD, Albert W. WWI & WWII Albert was born on May 25, 1897 in Preeceville, ON. He enlisted with the Army during the First World War. In 1928, Albert and his wife Edith moved to the Arborfield area where they got a homestead and raised three children. He re-enlisted during the Second World War with the R.C.E. on July 3, 1941 and served in Canada until his discharge on July 25, 1942. He was a member of Arborfield Legion Branch 203. Albert passed away on May 3, 1985. HEASLIP (STRATHDEE), Bessie Aileen WWII Bessie grew up in St Marys, ON and joined the Canadian Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (C.W.A.A.F.) in November of 1941. In early 1942, the C.W.A.A.F. became the Royal Canadian Air Force Women’s Division (W.D.). She trained in Toronto and then took a cookery course at Mac Hall in Guelph after which she was posted to No. 5 Service Flying Training School in Brantford, ON for nine months. Her training was cut short because the officers needed cooks at No. 6 Repair Depot in Trenton, ON. She met and married Charles Heaslip of Indian Head, SK in 1943. They were the first soldiers to be married on the base. They moved to the family farm near Indian Head in 1945. She was a member of the Indian Head Legion Branch 114 for over 43 years and passed away in 2011. HEASLIP, Charles James WWII Charles grew up in Indian Head, SK. He and many others from the Sunny Slope District joined the Air Force during the Second World War as soon as the call was sent out in October of 1940. He spent the war years in Trenton, ON with a short posting in Torbay, NL. He married Bessie Strathdee of St Marys, ON in 1943 when they were both stationed in Trenton. They were the first soldiers to be married on base. They moved to the family farm in 1945. He was a member of the Indian Head Legion Branch 144 for 53 years and a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion. Charles passed away in 2001.
