The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 121 GORANSON, Donald Leroy “Don” WWII & SPECIAL DUTY AREA Don was born on December 15, 1921 in Weyburn, SK. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and graduated in Winnipeg as a Pilot Officer (Bomb Aimer). He was posted to England in 1944 to complete training as a crew of seven to fly Halifax Bombers. Don’s first trip was on April 6, 1945 to Hamburg with a load of 8 000 lbs. Other targets were Leipzig, Kiel and Heligoland. A trip to Bremen had to be canceled as the troops were too close to the target. The last bombing trip was on April 24, 1945 and the war ended on May 8, 1945. After a short leave at home, they reported to Dartmouth, NS to start training for the Pacific. He was discharged in August of 1945. His medals include the France and Germany Star 193945, Defence Medal 1939-45, Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp 193945, Comber Clasp and Ribbon 1939-45, King George VI War Medal 1939-45. He has been a member of the Weyburn Legion Branch 47 for forty-three years. GORDON, James Peter “Jimmie” WWII Jimmie was born in Scotland in 1920. He served during the Second World War with the South Saskatchewan Regiment which he joined at age 18. He was taken prisoner at Dieppe and spent twoand-a-half years in a prisoner of war camp in Germany. While there, he contracted tuberculosis. He returned to Canada in 1945 under a prisoner exchange agreement and was a patient at Fort San for seven years. He worked for the Saskatchewan AntiTuberculosis League for 35 years, starting as a chartist and later was in charge of medical records at the Fort San record office. Jimmie was a Life Member of the Tuberculosis Veteran’s Section of The Royal Canadian Legion and was a member of the Fort Qu’Appelle Legion for fifty-eight years. He passed away in 2003. GRANDFIELD, George Jr. WWII George was born in 1925. He served during the Second World War from 1943 until 1946 as a Private. He passed away in 1998.
