The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 115 FINDLAY, Edward WWII Edward was born on May 27, 1923 in the Semans District, SK and went to a small country-school one mile down the road. While farming with his father, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on January 13, 1943 and was on the maintenance crew stationed in Winnipeg, MB. For his service during the Second World War, Edward received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. While in the Forces, he married Hilda Butz of Regina. Upon his discharge on November 22, 1945, they came back to the farm in Saskatchewan. In 1947 they bought the land from Robert and Jean Findlay who then retired to Regina. They farmed for many years and he belonged to many organizations. He was a member of the Semans Legion Branch 108 for forty-one years. Edward passed away on April 24, 2007 after many enjoyable years of retirement. FINDLAY, Robert WWI Robert was born on January 6, 1892 to Scottish parents on a farm in England. He was the only one that came to Canada to Semans, SK in March of 1912 where he worked for farmers. In 1915, during the First World War, he went to Winnipeg, MB and joined the Fort Garry Horse and shortly after went overseas to France for nearly four years. In 1919, he came back to Semans to work for a farmer. In 1920, he bought a half a section of school land. He met Jean Maguire, a nurse in the area and married her in November of 1921. They had one son who bought the land in 1947. Robert and Jean then retired to Regina, enjoying many years of retirement. Robert passed away on June 27, 1981. FORBES, Harry Leo WWII Harry was born on April 11, 1918 in Maple Creek, SK. He enlistment in the Army on May 1, 1942 and served in Canada, Britain, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during the Second World War as a driver and motor mechanic with the Field Artillery in the 2nd Division ending up in the 1st Division for almost four years and discharged on January 24, 1946. He married Norma Anderson, a school teacher, on December 29, 1948. They worked as cattle ranchers in the Cypress Hills, 18 miles south east of Piapot, SK, until the Fall of 2010 when he sold his cows. At 97 years of age, he still operated one section of the former ranch for cattle forage. For his military service he was awarded the France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, War Medal 1939-45, Holland 60 and 65 - Thank You Medal. He has been a member of the Piapot Legion Branch 12 for fifty-five years.
