His brother Ernie was on the same ship when he returned to Canada in January 1946. While on duty in Holland, Cyril had met a young lady. They reconnected years later when he was a widower and they married in 1986. Cyril is a member of Eston Legion Branch 155. He joined the Army in 1942 and trained as a Paratrooper in Winnipeg, then later in Salisbury, England. Ernie’s platoon was under constant enemy fire when putting bridges together and working chest-deep in water and he was in Germany when hostilities ceased. Ernie and his brothers, Cyril, Shanley and Harry, got together many times in England and Europe during the war (later to see Harry’s grave). His brother Cyril was nearby and went to see him on February 19 and he states in his diary that he was conscious but in bad shape. Harry died the next day in a British field hospital and was buried at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery near Nijmegen, Netherlands.
