The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 49 BLACK, John WWI John was born in Michigan, USA in 1896 and lived in Saskatchewan’s Gardenia District in 1906. He married Irene Hamel and they had no children. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served as a Private in Canada, England, France, Belgium and Germany for about three years during World War I. John died in 1981 and is buried in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. BLANC, Francis E. WWII Francis was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA in 1895 and came to Quill Lake, Saskatchewan in 1913. He married Lena Prosko, had two children, and was a ‘civilian’ diamond driller for two years. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a 1st Lieutenant in Canada, England and Continental Europe during WWII. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese and did slave labour for three-and-a-half years as a woodcutter. Francis died in 1971. BLANC, Hubert WWI Hubert was born in Paris, France in 1893 and came to Quill Lake, Saskatchewan in 1913 and later lived in the Selkirk District. He joined the Army as a Private and went overseas with the 9th Platoon, 214th Battalion from Quill Lake. He then transferred to the 28th Battalion of the Saskatchewan Regiment and was killed in action in Belgium in 1917. Hubert was 24 years of age and single when he died.
