The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 427 WEST, Richard Fraser “Dick” WWII Dick was born on March 3, 1918 in Aberdeen, Scotland and studied in Dundee towards the degree in architecture. He left the University after three years and enlisted as a gunner in the British Army in October 1939. He went to France as reinforcement for the Highland Division then returned to Britain for officer training and was commissioned in the fall of 1942. Dick served in Normandy with the British Artillery and his regiment was later transferred to the 2nd Canadian Corps where he was awarded the Military Cross. Captain West left the service in January 1946 and completed his degree in architecture, working for a time in southern England before moving to Canada in 1954 on a contract with the Public Works Department of the Canadian government. Dick married Joan Hart of Landis, Saskatchewan and worked for the Canadian government his whole life, in Saint John, New Brunswick, then in the Eastern Arctic and finally in Ottawa. He moved to Saskatoon after retirement. He was also awarded the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation Medal in 1992. WESTBY, Mahlon WWII Mahlon was born in Rose Valley, Saskatchewan on December 18, 1915. He enlisted in Flin Flon, Manitoba on April 7, 1941 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He trained as a wireless operator, served in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe in Bomber Command, and completed two operational tours, the first with Squadron 115 and the second with Squadron 195. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and left the service in Regina on May 1, 1945. After the war, Mahlon joined the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool as a grain buyer and country elevator operator at Rose Valley and became a traveling superintendent, and later an area superintendent for the Pool at Kindersley, Exam, Outlook, Rosetown and Regina. After retirement, he worked for the Corps of Commissionaires. He joined the Legion at Rose Valley and served as branch president from 1948-1950. He was also active in the Lutheran churches at Rose Valley, Rosetown and Saskatoon and was a village councilor in Rose Valley. Mahlon married and had a son and daughter. WHEATLEY, Arthur M. WWI Arthur was born in England but later lived in Clair, Saskatchewan. During World War I, he served as a Sergeant with the 8th Battalion, Royal Winnipeg Rifles, D Company, in Canada and France where he was killed in action at Vimy Ridge on April 10, 1917. He is buried at Bruay, France and commemorated at the Vimy Ridge Memorial.
