The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 423 WELCH, J. L. WWII J. L. Welch was born on January 8, 1919 in Grenfell, SK. He joined the Army in January 1940 and served with the Corps of Military Staff Clerks in Canada, the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. Sergeant Welch left the service in 1946. He married and has been a member of Nutana Legion Branch 362. WELSH, Harley R. WWII & KOREA Harley was born in Saskatoon on September 12, 1928. He joined the Army in August 1944 and left the service in October 1945. He enlisted in the Army again in August 1950 and served with the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry in Washington and Korea where his unit fought in the Battle of Kapyong from April 23-25, 1951. His unit was awarded the U.S. Presidential Unit Citation for this action. Harley left the service in Saskatoon in March 1952 as a Private and he married and had two sons. He worked as a painter and decorator from 1952 to 1962 and was a traveling salesman until he retired. Harley is a director of the Korea War Veterans Association. WENZEL, Charles Ernest RCMP Charles was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1901. He served in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Prince Albert and Lac La Ronge, Saskatchewan from 1936-1941 on Northern Duty where he patrolled by canoe and dog team. He served at one man detachments at Hudson Bay Junction, big River and Esterhazy. Life on one of these detachments was hard, hours were long, work was seven days a week and housing conditions were poor. By the time Corporal Wenzel retired, he had served from 1931-1953, a total of 22 years. He married Rubena McCloy in 1937 and they had one son and three daughters. Charles was a member of Prince Albert Legion Branch before he died in 1987.
