The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 369 SPARKS, Philip Thomas PEACETIME Philip was born in Saskatoon in 1940. He spent thirteen years in the regular forces and three years in the naval reserve, including serving on the East and West coasts and at army bases in Ontario at Kingston and Petawawa and at Gagetown, New Brunswick. Philip served in the Navy on HMCS Cayuga, Quinte, Swansea, Yukon, Annapolis and at HMCS Unicorn in Saskatoon. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration for 12 years of service in 1971 and left the service in July 1972. During his civilian work life, Philip worked in the logging industry, as a brakeman for CPR and British Columbia Railways, and he moved to Saskatchewan spending the last 30 years before his retirement in potash and uranium mining. He married Shirley in September 2005 and retired a few months later on December 30th. He now works as a cashier at the Walmart in Weyburn. Philip has been a member of The Legion in Weyburn and Stoughton. SPENCE, John R. KOREA & SPECIAL DUTY AREA John was born in Halifax on June 20, 1927. He enlisted in Halifax in August 1950 for service in Korea, joining the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. After Korea, he became part of the peacetime service with NATO Forces in Germany, on UN peacekeeping in Egypt, the United States and Canada, leaving the service on July 5, 1973 as Sergeant. John was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration. After leaving the service, he worked as a gunnery electrician at the Halifax dockyards, as lumber sales manager for Beaver Lumber Co. in Winnipeg and with Cooperative lumbers sales in Saskatoon. John married and has served Nutana Legion Branch 362 as sergeant-at-arms and on the social committee. STARK, Alan Blair PEACETIME Alan was born in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan on November 21, 1964. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with 435 T&R Squadron, 1 Air Movements Units in Cold Lake, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Shilo, Esquimalt, Golan Heights, Bahrain, Dubai and in the Gulf War. Alan was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration, the UN Disengagement Observation Force, the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal and the Gulf and Kuwait Medal.
