The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 361 SMITH, Archie J. M. WWII Archie was born in Griffin, Saskatchewan on July 6, 1913. He joined the RCAF on March 18, 1942 but his eyesight was too poor to be part of the air crew. He joined the intelligence service and went to England where he was promoted to Pilot Officer, serving with RCAF Squadrons 433 and 434 as intelligence officer and briefing air crews before and after flights with No. 6 Bomber Group. After Flying Officer Smith left the service in Saskatoon in March 1946, he became a traveling salesman with Sterling Wholesale Hardware before taking a job inside. He worked in Calgary in real estate for a year and then returned to Saskatoon where he joined Federated Cooperatives, becoming hardware manager. After retiring, he worked for a time at Western Development Museum and for Eaton’s. He played in the early days with Saskatoon Hilltops and has remained active on their governing board. He has also been active coaching kids’ baseball and as a member of the Optimist and Kiwanis clubs. Married with a son and daughter, Archie died in 1996. SMITH, Francis Bernard WWI Francis was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1893. He joined the Canadian Field Artillery in Toronto on June 9, 1916 and served in the 17th Battery when he went to France in the spring of 1917. He fought in the mud and trenches in France and Belgium until the end of the war. He was then sent to Germany with the Army of Occupation until the spring of 1919. Francis passed away in 1990. SMITH, George WWII George was born in 1910 in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada as a Leading Aircraftman from 1941-1945. George married, had one child, and farmed throughout his life. He was a member of Quill Lake Legion Branch 37 for fifty-three years before his death in 1999. George is buried in Quill Lake Cemetery.
