The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 353 SHIELS, Robert K. WWII Robert was born in the Hazlet area on March 27, 1925. He joined the Canadian Scottish Regiment in Lethbridge, Alberta in October 1941 at the age of sixteen and left Halifax in June 1942 to be stationed in England. In 1944, he transferred to the Regina Rifles and was sent to Normandy, France on June 10, 1944, just after DDay. Robert was wounded near Caen and died on July 10, 1944. He is buried at Bény-sur-Mer in Normandy. Shiels Lake in Northern Saskatchewan is named in his honour. SHILLINGTON, Alexander Merrill “Alex” WWII Alex was born in Delisle, Saskatchewan on March 18, 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in Saskatoon in September 1941 and served in the North Atlantic aboard HMCS Restigouche from February 1942. He then went to Cornwallis in December 1943 as a gunnery instructor then to HMCS Glace Bay as an AA2 and the ship’s Buffer. He also served as Acting Gunner’s Mate and was discharged in October 1945 as Petty Officer. Alex was awarded several medals. SIEMAN, Irwin Sonny KOREA Irwin was born on June 25, 1928 at Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on January 27, 1949 and served in Korea, leaving the service in December 1953 as Leading Seaman. Irwin has been a member of Nutana Legion Branch 362.
