The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 335 SAVAGE, John R. WWII John was born in Oxbow in 1921. He joined the Army on October 1, 1942 and was sent to England on August 19, 1943 after completing his training. Attached to the Lake Superior Regiment, he crossed the English Channel for France in June 1944 and on September 13, was “volunteered” to go on night patrol in Bruges, Belgium. John was shot in the leg and got shrapnel in his back. Bleeding badly, he wrapped his leg as tight as he could and passed out. He lay in a garden until the next day when the enemy came along, picked him up and left him in a vacant house. Two nuns and a doctor found him and after treating him, took him to a field hospital three days later. He then spent six weeks in England before being sent to a Winnipeg hospital. John was discharged in 1946 and spent another year in a British Columbia hospital. He was awarded five medals. John has been a member of Oxbow Legion Branch 187. SCAMBLER, James WWII James was born in Clair, Saskatchewan in 1917. During World War II, he served as a dispatch rider with the Canadian Army’s 1st Division in Canada, England, Sicily, Italy, and Holland. James married and moved to British Columbia where he died in 1989. He is buried in Victoria. SCAMBLER, John WWII John was born in Clair, Saskatchewan in 1915. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a Flight Lieutenant in Canada and England from 1940-1945. He flew Typhoon fighter planes, was credited with several kills, but became a POW at Stalag #3 after he was shot down over France. After his discharge, John moved to British Columbia where he later died. He was married and had 2 children.
