The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 331 SANDERSON, Frank Gordon WWII Frank was born in 1922 on the home farm in Avonlea, Saskatchewan. He joined the RCAF and served on Halifax aircraft in Canada and England during WWII. He was with 419 Moose Squadron when he was killed in action on January 20, 1944 while on a mission over Berlin. Their aircraft had reached the turning point, about sixty miles northeast of the target, when it was attacked by a German ME-109 fighter aircraft and set on fire. The pilot ordered the bombs jettisoned and then turned the aircraft for home. The Halifax was damaged by flak as it neared Hamburg and the crew was told to bail out. Sergeant Sanderson and one of the crew, not Canadian, were fatally wounded in the attacks and were left in the aircraft when the other five of the crew bailed out. They were all taken prisoners of war. Sergeant Air Gunner Sanderson is buried in the Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg, Germany. Gordon was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal posthumously. His brother George was also killed in action on June 3, 1942. SANDERSON, George Fredrick WWII George was born on the home farm in Avonlea, Saskatchewan in 1920. He joined the Air Force and served with 419 Squadron on Sterling aircraft armed with 24 x 4 lb. incendiary bombs. Six RAF crew members went missing over the North Sea and were believed killed as they failed to return from operations over enemy territory. Pilot Officer Sanderson has no known grave and his name is inscribed on the Runnymede War Memorial in Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, England. George was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal posthumously. His brother Frank was also killed in action on a bombing mission on January 20, 1944. SANDERSON, Joseph WWII Joseph was born in Ireland in 1919. He came to Canada as a youngster and was raised on a farm near Saskatoon. Joseph joined the Army during WWII and served as a Gunner in England and France. After the war, he worked on a farm and for the Municipality of Corman Park until he retired. Joseph passed away in 1986.
