The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 295 PHANEUF, Eugene WWII Eugene was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan in 1911. He joined the Army and served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. Eugene was killed in action in Holland on October 12, 1944 and is buried at Adegem Canadian War Cemetery in Belgium. Phaneuf Lake in Northern Saskatchewan was named after him. PHILLIPS, Arlee SPECIAL DUTY AREA & PEACETIME Arlee was born in Saskatoon, SK on February 29, 1936. He farmed in Unity, SK before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 13, 1959 and training at St. Jean, QC as a heavy equipment operator. Arlee served at Resolute Bay (1962-63), with the NATO forces in Zweibrücken in West Germany (1964-67), and at the Dana radar base in Saskatchewan from 1967 until he left the service in 1973. Arlee was rehired as a heavy equipment operator at Dana and remained there another 13 years. Before he joined the RCAF, he had served in the Reserves with the Prince Albert Volunteers at Unity, Saskatchewan, giving him 30 years in the service. Arlee received the Canadian Forces Decoration and the Master Driver Award for 20 years of accident-free driving. Arlee is married with one son (deceased) and three daughters. PHILLIPS, Robert H. D. “Bob” WWII Bob was born on December 3, 1921 in Regina where he enlisted on June 7, 1941. He served briefly in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps then transferred to the 8th Light Anti-aircraft Artillery Regiment. Sergeant Phillips left the service in Regina on January 30, 1945. He studied economics and political science and worked as a writer most of his life. He was a newspaper reporter and editor in Canada and Britain (1948-60), a research economist (1960-73) and editor and publisher of Western Producer Publications in Saskatoon until his retirement in 1986. Bob became a professional agrologist and in 1987 and the Agricultural Institute of Canada elected him a Fellow (FAIC). In 1988, the University of Regina awarded him an honorary Doctor of Law degree (LLD). Since 1986, he and his wife have been incorporated as a publishing company and have produced several local and family history books.
