The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 25 ASHWIN, Wesley Duncan “Wes” WWII Wes was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in 1924. He joined the Navy and served on the minesweeper HMCS Caraquet on the high seas, on Canada’s east coast, and in the English Channel on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was a Signalman based at Plymouth, England from August 1942 to November 1945 and was part of the task force at Omaha Beach (June 6, 1944) sweeping the English Channel. Wes attended the University of Saskatchewan for a degree in engineering and St. Andrews College for a degree in theological studies (B.E. and M.T.S.). He was ordained Minister in the United Church of Canada and served Climax, Woodrow, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon and Shellbrook before retiring in 1989. ATKINS, Ernest KOREA Ernest was born in Broadview, Saskatchewan in 1930. He joined the Army on May 17, 1951 and trained with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadian) until October 1952. He was then shipped to Korea where he served until May 1954. After his release, he returned to Broadview where he worked in construction and raised livestock before retiring. He still resides in Broadview. Ernest was awarded the Korea Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, as well as the U.S.A. Commemorative Certificate. ATKINSON, Donald PEACETIME Donald was born in Dinsmore, Saskatchewan on November 29, 1929. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Forces from November 1950 to October 1983 in Canada, Germany, United States, Ghana, and West Africa. His field was finance and logistics.
