The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 23 ARNASON, Gisli Walter SPECIAL DUTY AREA & PEACETIME Gisli was born in Winnipegosis, Manitoba in 1931. He joined the Army in Regina and served from 1954 to 1967 when he was discharged in Vancouver. Gisli was a United Nations Peacekeeper who served in the Middle East, Gaza, Lebanon and the Congo. He was a physical instructor trainer in 1957, a storeman (Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps) in 1961, and was awarded the UNEF Medal in 1958. Gisli was a member of Foam Lake Legion Branch 16 for twenty-seven years before he died in 2009. ASHWIN (nee McCONNELL), Doreen Elizabeth WWII Doreen was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in 1923. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as LAW in Pay/Accounts from April 1943 to March 1946 in Patricia Bay and Vancouver Island, British Columbia. ASHWIN, Guy Arthur WWI & WWII Guy was born in 1894 in Pasqua, Saskatchewan. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces on June 19, 1915 and served as a Private with the 53rd Battalion and the 11th Machine Gun Brigade in 1916 in Belgium and France from August 1916 to December 1918. Guy was discharged on March 29, 1919, leaving with a damaged knee which left him lame for the rest of this life. During World War II, he joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in Dundurn, Saskatchewan on October 8, 1940 and served at No. 8 General Hospital. After his discharge on February 17, 1941 for medical reasons, Guy was employed by M&C Aviation in Prince Albert. He was fabric foreman for the repair of the Tiger Moth Training Aircraft used at the Commonwealth Elementary Flying School in Prince Albert and later worked in the Eaton’s menswear department until his retirement. Guy was a member of Prince Albert Legion Branch 2 before he died in 1985.
