The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 229 MARTIN, Maurice Allan WWII Maurice was born on April 18, 1920 in Delisle, Saskatchewan. After joining the Royal Canadian Air Force and training as a navigator in Edmonton, he was assigned to 432 Leaside Squadron in April 1941. He then went overseas to England in October 1942 and was navigator on Halifax aircraft. On February 16, 1945, he crashed between Stillington and Huby in Yorkshire. Maurice is buried in the Stonefall Cemetery in Harrogate, Yorkshire. On February 27, 1964, Martin Lake in Northern Saskatchewan was named in his honour. MASON, J. Aubrey WWII Aubrey was born on July 13, 1922 in Saskatoon. He enlisted on October 30, 1942 in Regina and served with the Calgary Highlanders from 1942-45, then with the Regina Rifle Regiment in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. He was wounded when they were closing in on Falaise, after which Private Mason spent the summer of 1945 in Holland and left the service in Regina on February 6, 1946. After the war, Aubrey farmed, operated a general store, worked in construction and sold farm machinery. Married with five children, he served on local boards for the school and the telephone company. MATHEOS, James “Jim” WWII Jim was born on September 9, 1924 in Saskatoon. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on January 9, 1942 in Saskatoon and served 23 months on the high seas on HMCS Sans Peur and on shore on HMCS Unicorn, Naden and Cornwallis. On patrol along the west and east coasts, Jim recounts how his ship experienced hurricane winds and high seas with freezing sleet for five or six hours 300 miles off the coast of New York. They made it through the storm without injuries to the crew and after a refit and repairs in Halifax, was soon back in regular service. Able Seaman Matheos left the service on July 30, 1945 and took business administration and accounting at the University of Saskatchewan. He then worked as a steno clerk for the City of Saskatoon, as office manager for a Domtar branch, as general manager for Avis Rent-a-Car (Western Canada) and then operated an Avis franchise.
