The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 225 MALOFF, William “Bill” WWII Bill was born in 1920 in Langham, Saskatchewan. He enlisted on March 23, 1943 and served in the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. Bill left the service in March 1946 as a Craftsman. He married and became a member of Nutana Legion Branch 362. MANSUY, Gustave “Gus” WWII Gus was born in 1917 in Parkman, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army on June 1, 1940 and served with the Regina Rifles 1st Battalion in the Netherlands. Gus related this story to his family of a brief ‘enemy’ encounter when he was serving as a rifleman with the Canadian Occupation Force (CAOF). Gus was patrolling the streets of a city in Holland in order to secure the safety of the local people when a German soldier, armed with his gun, appeared on the same sidewalk where he was walking. He seemed to want to show he was no different than Gus was. They both turned around to walk the other way as neither one wanted to shoot the other. On November 7, 1945, Gus was discharged. He passed away in 1999. MARKASY, Don WWII Don was born on August 13, 1920 in Aberdeen, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Saskatoon and served in Canada during WWII. He left the service in August 1945 in Trenton, Ontario as Aircraftman. After the war, he attended the School of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan and became a farmer while being active in the Saskatchewan Hog Commission. Don married and divorced.
