He enlisted in Regina in August 1942 in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Alaska, the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. He says he served on fighter squadrons 111 and 440 but cannot give a name to his job. However, on both jobs, he had to find pilots to fly the planes required for a specific mission and that involved a fair bit of phoning. He left the service in Winnipeg in the spring of 1946 as Leading Aircraftman. After the war, he worked for a time with his father who was an Imperial Oil agent in Stockholm and then became a Wheat Pool country elevator agent at Spy Hill, Steelman and Wordsworth. Later, he worked in the potash mine at Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. Married with a son and two daughters, Bill joined the Stockholm Legion Branch 265 and was also a member at Spy Hill before moving to Saskatoon.
