The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 205 KOWBEL, Stephen “Steve” WWII Steve was born on December 17, 1917 in Vonda, Saskatchewan. He was a farmer before enlisting on April 29, 1943, training as a Paratrooper at Fort Benning in Georgia, and serving in the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, with the 6th Britain Airborne Division in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. He dropped for the first time on DDay into Normandy where the assignment for his 600-men unit was to take out the gun emplacement at Merville Battery. Three days later, the remaining 250 men got back to their Battalion. After taking on reinforcements, they were sent to Belgium at the Battle of the Bulge and on March 24, 1945, they dropped over the Rhine into Germany. Private Kowbel left the service in March 1946. Steve returned to farming for a time but he moved to the city and worked as a shipper for a hardware wholesaler and as a receiver for a drug wholesaler. He married but divorced after he had two sons and four daughters. KRIENKE, Lloyd G. WWII Lloyd was born in 1917 in Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada as a Leading Aircraftsman. He married, had one child, and was a grain buyer for National Elevator co. Lloyd was a member of Quill Lake Legion Branch 37 for forty-six years before he died in 1992. He was buried in Saskatchewan’s Quill Lake Cemetery. KRISTOFF, John Michael WWII John was born in 1918 in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. He joined the Canadian Army in 1939 and served as a Rifleman with the Regina Rifles in the United Kingdom, Holland and Germany during WWII. John was awarded the France and Germany Star. After his discharge in February 1946, he farmed and was a grain buyer in Esterhazy Pool. John was a Life Member of Esterhazy Legion Branch 249 where he held several positions before he passed away in 2002.
