The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 199 KERR, Lloyd Winston WWII Lloyd was born in Wawota, Saskatchewan on August 25, 1918 but the family moved to the Torch River District in 1930. His siblings, Howard and Irwin Arthur, served in the Army and Lloyd and Ryan Elgin served in the Navy. In 1940, Lloyd joined the RCNVR in Regina and then transferred to Esquimalt, BC. On September 13, 1941, he sailed 7,000 miles on the minesweeper HMCS Malpeque via the Panama Canal to Halifax, NS where he took ASDIC training and qualified for HSD and Leading Seaman. On August 10, 1943, Lloyd was sent to the training vessel HMCS Hamilton where he demonstrated ASDIC equipment, echo sounders and seamanship. Lloyd was discharged at HMCS Cornwallis at the end of WWII. In 1949, he married Hazel Doris Fillier and they left for Torch River where he purchased land through the VLA. They had two children. Lloyd continued to farm and from 1966 to 1983, he managed the Torch River Co-Op Store. He now resides in Nipawin, SK where he is a member of Legion Branch 120. KETCHESON, Wilfred N. WWII Wilfred was born in 1921 in Canada. He joined the Army and served in Canada from 1942-1946 with the Dental Corps and Light Infantry. Wilfred married, had three children, and lives in the United States. KIDD, Frederick James “Fred” WWII Fred was born on April 25, 1909 in Humboldt, SK. He joined the Regina Rifle Regiment on November 11, 1940 and served with in the United Kingdom, at Dieppe, France and in Northwest Europe. He suffered a slight leg wound from a spent bullet during the war. Back in civilian life, he worked at a wide array of jobs: mechanic, CNR call boy, at a saw mill, for prairie farmers, in a lumber camp, as homesteader, fast food restaurant, and later joined the Saskatchewan government and worked on construction, as housing manager and maintenance mechanic. Fred was active in Humboldt, serving on the Board of directors of the United Church, as a Boy Scout leader and working with senior citizens. He became a Life Member at Humboldt Legion Branch 28 and served on many committees before transferring to Nutana Legion Branch 362 and holding executive positions there, including vice-president, branch president, service officer and sergeant-at-arms. Fred married and had a son and a daughter.
