The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 195 KATZMAN, Chan WWII Chan was born in Russia on February 22, 1922. He enlisted on June 11, 1940 at Prince Albert and joined the Regina Rifle Regiment to serve in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. Rifleman Katzman was with the Regina Rifles in the D-Day Invasion at Normandy, was wounded in action twice and left the service in Regina on September 25, 1944. After the war, he worked in Trail, British Columbia firing a smelter furnace and worked underground on pick and shovel work. Then he operated his own retail clothing business in Wadena for four years before moving to Saskatoon where he operated a clothing store for 34 years. Chan married and had four sons and a daughter. KAYE, Ludwig WWII Ludwig was born on July 12, 1918 in Yellow Creek, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in Regina in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and served in the United Kingdom during World War II. Sergeant Ludwig left the service in Regina in 1945. KEELAN, Gerard “Gerry” WWII Gerry was born on July 16, 1919 in Prelate, SK. He joined the RCMP on April 19, 1938 in Regina, the Army in Toronto on April 19, 1940, and was posted to No. 1 Canadian Provost whose members were all serving RCMP. Gerry and six other RCMPs sailed to Britain on the SS Nerissa which was hit by three Nazi torpedoes on the night of April 30, 1941. The ship sank within five minutes and he was one of 35 survivors. He continued on to Europe where he served in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe at No. 1 CGRU and with No. 13 Provost. Corporal Keelan left the Army in October 1945 and rejoined the RCMP, serving until 1962 when he joined the Saskatoon Police Department as Supervisor of central records until his retirement in 1982. He joined the Yorkton Legion Branch 77 in 1946 and transferred to Regina. He is a Life Member of Nutana Legion Branch 362 and has served as president, first, second and third vice-president and in several other executive positions. Gerry married and had four children.
