The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 181 JACKSON, Donald J. G. WWII Donald was born on August 25, 1915 in Field, BC. After joining the Royal Air Force in London, England on May 24, 1937, he trained as a pilot and served in RAF Squadrons 4 and 34 in Singapore and other Far Eastern locations, and in RAF Squadron 102 flying out of Yorkshire in Britain. On August 22, 1943, his bomber was shot down on a flight to Cologne; the flight engineer was killed and others in the crew were taken prisoner by the Germans and sent as POWs to Stalag Luft III. In May 1945, he was rescued and released by the British Army. Donald married Lieutenant Irene Whitefield who served in India and Burma with Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service. He transferred to the RCAF and served on a number of assignments after the war, retiring as Wing Commander in January 1965. He worked at a number of jobs until retiring in 1980 and belonged to the Legion branches in Saskatoon and Humboldt, SK, and Morin Heights, QC. JAKES, Frank WWII Frank was born on January 25, 1925 in Saskatoon. He enlisted there in May 1942 and served as an Able Seaman in the United Kingdom and on the high seas on HMCS Gatineau, HMCS Saskatchewan, HMCS Restigouche, all River class destroyers. He left the service on October 1, 1945 at Saskatoon and then became a bindery worker at Modern Press, the printing company of Western Producer Publications in Saskatoon. Frank married and had two sons and three daughters. He has been a member of Nutana Legion Branch 362. JAMES, Harrington John WWII John was born on June 26, 1920 in Carlisle, England. He enlisted in the Army on June 14, 1941 in Regina, was posted to the Royal Canadian Engineers, and trained for the 4th Canadian Armoured Division at Dundurn, SK, Shilo, MB, Petawawa, ON and Debert, NS. He went to the United Kingdom in 1942, transferred to Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, and served in Sicily, Italy and Northwest Europe. John left the service in Regina on November 8, 1945 as Signalman, married and had a daughter. After the war, he held various positions in the construction industry: construction superintendent on bridges from 1945-55; building manager for the Department of Public Works (DPW) in Edmonton from 1955-58; technical officer with RCMP in Regina from 19581962; territorial officer with DPW for Saskatchewan from 1962-67; technical officer for DPW construction for Saskatchewan from 1967-1974; and project construction officer for Saskatchewan from 1974-1980. John retired in 1980 and has been a member of Nutana Legion Branch 362.
