The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 175 HRYNKIW, Walter WWII Walter was born in Poland on February 1, 1920 and came to Canada with his parents in 1927, settling in Plunkett, SK. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Saskatoon in July 1941, trained as a pilot, and completed 52 missions with Royal Air Force squadrons 78 and 101, flying Halifax, Wellington and Lancaster bombers. He recalls his plane getting shot up and crashing south of London on a return flight from a mission. With a fatality and injuries to the crew, Walter believed he would never fly again but there was an urgent need for pilots and the RAF helped the survivors get through with compassionate leave and professional counseling. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross after a particularly difficult engagement on a bombing mission over Stuttgart, Germany on September 9, 1943. He left the service in Winnipeg in 1945 as Flying Officer, got married and had four children. He returned to Plunkett where he and his wife operated Plunkett’s General Store for 26 years. They retired in 1972 and moved into Saskatoon. HUBBARD, Garratt P. “Garry” WWII Garry was born in 1925 in Avonlea. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 14, 1943 as an Air Gunner and served in England with 115 Squadron Bomber Command as Rear Gunner on Lancaster bombers. He dropped food over Holland and brought P.O.W.s back from Germany. Garry volunteered for the Pacific area and was re-crewing at Greenwood, Nova Scotia when VJ was announced. He returned to farming and retired in Avonlea where he still lives. Garry has been a member of Avonlea Legion Branch 236 for twenty-five years. HUNTER, D. H. Harry WWI Harry was born in Orangeville, Ontario in 1882 and came to Clair, Saskatchewan in 1908. He joined the Army and served as a Private with the 214th Battalion in Canada and overseas. He married and had one child. Harry passed away and was buried in Scrip Ponass Lake, Saskatchewan.
