The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 173 HOOK, Roland WWII Roland was born in 1915 and joined the Army in Regina in 1940 to serve with the Regina Rifle Regiment. He saw action on D-Day on June 6, 1944 and after numerous battles, was wounded in the arm and hip by shrapnel when under fire at the Leopold Canal in Belgium on October 7, 1944. Sergeant Major Hook was discharged at the end of the war after serving in Canada, England, France and Belgium. Roland received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. Roland was a member of Bateman Legion Branch 163 for over 50 years before he passed away on December 12, 2009. HOPKINS, Alfred Scott “Bill” WWII Bill was born on November 21, 1915 in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in Toronto, Ontario on March 1, 1941 and went to Halifax until he was shipped out with his Division to Britain that same month. Bill served with the 2nd Division of the Royal Canadian Active Service Force in Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland until the time of liberation. Private Hopkins was discharged on demobilization on March 4, 1946 to return to his mother’s farm near Fairmount, Saskatchewan. While farming there, he met and married June Pederson, also of Fairmount. They raised four children. Bill was a member of Flaxcombe Legion Branch 98 before he passed away on July 9, 1980. His campaign medals included the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-45. HOWSE, Norman Alexander “Alec” WWII Alec, eldest son of Norman and Ethel Howse, was born on November 7, 1916 at their homestead seven miles south of Avonlea, Saskatchewan. He attended Moorefield School until he finished Grade 10 after which he farmed with his parents until he joined the South Saskatchewan Regiment out of Weyburn in 1942. He took his basic training in Regina, his advanced training in Shilo, and served overseas as a signaler in England, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Alec was awarded the France and Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He later received a Thank You Medal from the Government of Holland. Alec returned to the farm in 1946 and married Ruth Schuett in 1951, raising four sons. They now reside in Moose Jaw. Alec has been a member of Avonlea Legion Branch 236 for twenty-five years.
