The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 153 HANNAH, Rennie Alexander “Ren” WWI Ren was born to Samuel and Margaret Jane (Brown) Hannah on October 3, 1891 in Carleton County, Ontario, the 11th of 18 children. They later lived in Rouleau, Saskatchewan. On January 12, 1916, Ren and three of his brothers enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. After serving in Europe during World War I, he married Jessie Nicholson on April 19, 1920 and they had three daughters. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Ren moved his family to northern Saskatchewan where he cleared land, hunted and eked out a living on $9.00 a month from the government. The family later moved to Moose Jaw where Jessie’s father left them a home. In 1939, the family moved to Ontario where life still meant hard work but was somewhat easier. Ren died in 1960. HANNAH, Samuel “Sam” WWI Sam was born on October 3, 1876 in Carleton County, Ontario, the second of eighteen children of Samuel and Margaret Jane (Brown) Hannah. He moved to Rouleau, Saskatchewan with the family when he was 27 years old. Sam filed on a homestead 11 miles east of Rouleau in 1902 but his homestead did not have a water supply on it so he did not meet the legal requirement for living on the land. After a few years, he moved to Rouleau. On January 3, 1916, Sam, with three of his brothers, enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force and served in Canada for the duration of the war. He died on July 10, 1939 and is buried in the Rouleau Cemetery where his tombstone mistakenly reads the year of death as 1935. HANNAH, Wesley Arthur “Wes” WWI Wes, born in Carleton County, Ontario on March 4, 1895, was the firstborn of twins, the 13th and 14th of 18 children of Samuel and Margaret Jane (Brown) Hannah. The twins were eight years old when the family moved to Rouleau, Saskatchewan. On February 14, 1916, Wes enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force, along with three of his brothers. After serving in Europe, Wes completed high school and took advantage of the short teacher training offered in the province. He taught for a short time at Sudom School, south of Rouleau, but turned to his real interest, farming. On February 16, 1924, Wes married Norma Wilson with whom he had three children. In 1944, Wes and his twin, Danby, started an implement dealership in Regina and later in Rouleau. Wes was a member of Rouleau Legion Branch 44 for a time before he died in 1966 in Brownsville, Texas.
