The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 151 HAMEL, Ralph WWII Ralph was born in Zealandia, Saskatchewan in 1914 but came to the Clair (Scrip) area in 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a gunner in Canada, England and Europe during World War II. Flight Sergeant Hamel made 33 flights over Germany. Married with six children, Ralph died in 1968 and is buried in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. HAMLYN (nee HENSON), Muriel Alice PEACETIME Muriel was born on March 12, 1949 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. After completing high school, she trained as a secretary and moved to Ontario where she joined the Air Force as an administrative clerk in 1969. Muriel spent most of her career in Canada with postings in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Saskatoon. In 1975, she did a 6-month tour in Egypt with the UN, one of the first 44 women to serve with the UN. After retiring from the military in 1979, Muriel trained as a nurse and returned to university where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in 1989. In 2001, she married Reg Hamlyn and they lived in Prince Albert until Reg retired. They then moved to Paddockwood where they are both active members of Paddockwood Legion Branch 31. Muriel is presently serving as secretary to the Branch. HANNAH, Jasen Albert “Ab” WWI Ab was born to Samuel and Margaret Jane (Brown) Hannah on November 11, 1899 in Carleton County, Ontario, the youngest of 18 children. On February 11, 1916 at the age of 17, he enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at $1.50 per day and served overseas until 1918. Three of his brothers had also enlisted in the Force. On his return, he completed his high school, entered Queen’s University, and graduated in 1928 with his M.D. He was the Hoffman Fellow in Pathology (Edinburgh) from 1929-1930. In 1929, Ab married Ruth Lyons and in 1930, they returned to Toronto where Ab worked at the Banting Institute. In 1937, he was instrumental in organizing the Associated Medical Services. Ab and Ruth had two children. In 1976, the Hannah Foundation was established, founding five chairs in five medical schools in Ontario. Ab died on May 2, 1977.
