The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 417 WELTER, Kenneth Leslie WWII Kenneth was born in the Cantaur District, near Swift Current, Saskatchewan, on October 18, 1917. He joined the South Saskatchewan Regiment Infantry on June 4, 1940, serving in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe, and was discharged on October 20, 1946. Ken moved to Yorkton area in 1949, married Vivian Dorn in 1950, and farmed until 1984. In retirement, he moved to Hamilton, Ontario, in 1999 with friend Sophie Ritz. He passed away on November 9, 2005, and had been a Life Member of the Springside Branch #71 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 41 years. WESCHE, Jack WWII Jack joined the Lord Strathcona Horse, 5th Division “A” Squadron on March 18, 1941. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Continental Europe, and was discharged on September 9, 1946. He married his wife, Kay, and eventually they moved to Calgary. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 War Medal, the Defence Medal, the Italy Star, and the 1939-45 Star. WHITFIELD, Newton Melville WWII Newton was born in Alameda, Saskatchewan, on March 5, 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on January 14, 1943 and received his Pilots Flying Badge and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was discharged on May 2, 1945 and returned to Alameda to farm. He married Jeanette Krieger on July 12, 1958. He has since retired and lives in Carlyle, Saskatchewan, and is a member of the Alameda Branch #267 of The Royal Canadian Legion. WHITFIELD, Grant Charles Wesley WWII Grant was born in Alameda, Saskatchewan, on March 19, 1921. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on May 15, 1941, training in Brandon, Manitoba, and then St. Thomas, Ontario, and graduated as an Aero Engine Mechanic. He was discharged on July 7, 1945 and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. While in the service, he met and married Barbara Houseman, who was also in the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force. They returned to Alameda to farm and raise horses and had six children. Grant is a member of the Alameda Branch #267 of The Royal Canadian Legion and was very active in the community.
