The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 415 WEIGEL, Henry Paul WWII Henry was born in Wynyard, Saskatchewan, on March 16, 1921. He joined the Edmonton Fusiliers, then the Prince of Wales Rangers Coast Guard from 1941-1943. In 1934, the family moved to Quill Lake and he purchased land in the Kirkwall area. He married Irene Manning and moved his family to Choiceland in 1972. WEITZEL, Adolph WWI Adolph was born on January 11, 1885 in the USA. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces on May 28, 1918. Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Weitzel and family of six (Adolph, Bill, Emiel, Annie, Violet and Liza) moved to Girvin, Saskatchewan. Frederick passed away on the homestead in 1922 and Violet moved to Craik. The boys of the family moved the furniture, cattle and horses to Eldersley, and the mother, Liza, and Annie came later, and all got moved finally to the Connell Creek area in 1922 and the boys got a saw mill going. WELLS, M. C. “Dick” WWII Dick was born on October 31, 1933 on the family farm near Hazlet, Saskatchewan, and served over 29 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer, serving on HMCS Cornwallis, HMCS Gloucester, HMCS Coverdale, HMCS Churchill, CFS Alert, NRS Masset, HMCS Stadacona, and on various frigates in the 5th Squadron in Ottawa. He began his career as a 291 operator and later transferred to the 221 technical trade and finally to the 224 trade. He married Judy Cooke in 1958 and they had two children. On his retirement, he returned to southwest Saskatchewan, where he has been the Mayor of the village of Carmichael for 26 years and is a Life Member of the Tompkins Branch #140 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 27 years and is currently vice-president of the Saskatchewan Command. WELLS, Fon B. SPECIAL AREA DUTY & PEACETIME Fon was born in Cabri, Saskatchewan, on May 16, 1937 and grew up on the family farm and was an accomplished horseman and avid baseball player and very family-oriented individual. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in November 1956 in Calgary at HMCS Tecumseh and took his new entry training at HMCS Cornwallis and served on HMCS Gloucester, HMVS Churchill CFS Alert and HMCS Stadacona as a 291 operator. He was married and had two sons and one daughter. He lost his battle with cancer on September 6, 2001. He had been a member of the Centrillia, Ontario, Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion for 15 years.
