The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 409 WALTER, Eric WWII Eric was born in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, in 1919. He joined the 1st Canadian Light Signals Corps in May 1941, and took his basic training in Regina, and was then sent to Brandon in September 1941, and England in December of that year aboard the Louis Pasteur. He became a driver for the gun carriers and then transferred to the radar unit and then drove for communications until the end of the war. He was sent to Rotterdam to restore telephone systems and met his future wife, a young Dutch woman, Wilhelmina Johanna Frictman, and returned to Canada and worked in Vancouver for one year following his discharge, and then back to Quill Lake, being employed by the Federated Co-op. He had served in England, Belgium, Germany, France, Holland and Canada. Eric sent for his wife and got married in Saskatoon in July 1947, and they raised six children. He had been a member of the Wynyard Branch #101 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 62 years before he passed away in 2009. WALTER, Stanley Roger WWII Stanley was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, in 1925. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve on March 4, 1943. His theatre of service was in Canada and the High Seas on the Eyebright Corvet. He was in the Signal Corps. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the War Medal, and the Royal and Merchant Navy Star. Stanley was a champion swimmer for his regiment in Ottawa. He passed away in Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1986. WALTON, Herbert WWII Herbert was born at Shackleton, Saskatchewan, on August 2, 1923, to Cecil and Maggie, in a family of nine. Herb received his education at Cabri, joined the Army in 1942, and was based in Canada. In 1944, following the war years, he moved to the Megan District, east of Arborfield, and worked for farmers in the summer and at saw mills in the winter. He married Nina Goodfellow in 1946 and they raised three children: Herb, Hilda and Marlene. Herb passed away in October 1959, after having open-heart surgery in March. Herb and Nina belonged to the Arborfield Legion and Auxiliary. Nina passed away on March 18, 2000. WALTERS, Cyril WWII & SPECIAL AREA DUTY Cyril was born in Lafleche, Saskatchewan, in 1919. He joined the Army and served in London, Ontario. He took his basic training in Regina and then to Kingston and London as Corporal at the repair depot for all of the Army vehicles. He stayed in a rented apartment and not in the barracks. When the war was over, he returned to Regina. Cyril passed away in 1975 and had been a member of the Assiniboia Branch #17 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 30 years.
