The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 401 VENN, Leo WWII Leo was born at Laird, Ontario, and received his education at Lange and Leader, Saskatchewan, and went to barber school at Regina and also went to work at the gold mines at Timmins, Ontario. He married Louise Hueser at Timmons and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force with the service police section and took his training at Lachine, Quebec. Leo was stationed at Dafoe, St. Marguerite, Quebec, and Centralia, Ontario. After he was discharged, he operated a barber shop and pool room at Cutknife. In 1950, he purchased the barber shop and pool room at Arborfield and ran it until his passing, due to cancer, on September 8, 1970. Louise continued to run the business for another four-and-a-half years before selling it. They raised two children: Beverley and Robert. Louise passed away on August 10, 1987. VERMEERSCH, Alphonse C. WWII Alphonse was born in the Landshut District, Langenburg, Saskatchewan, on April 25, 1920. He joined the NRMA (from February 19-November 8, 1943) 1st Halifax Coast Regiment (November 8, 1943-September 7, 1945). He married Frances in 1945 and they raised four sons. He returned to the farm, did other odd jobs, and became custodian of the Langenburg School in 1966 and remained there until 1982. He loved cards, bowling, hunting, camping, fishing and coaching minor ball. Alphonse passed away in Langenburg on August 27, 1995. VERMEERSCH, Raymond WWII Raymond was born in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, on June 1, 1922. He joined the Lake Superior Regiment (Infantry) in March 1943 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. Raymond was killed in action on October 28, 1944 at Antwerp, Belgium, and is buried in Bergen Op Zoom Canadian Cemetery. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 War Medal, the France/Germany Star, and the Purple Heart. A lake is named after him in northern Saskatchewan, Vermeersch Lake. VERMEERSCH, Emil WWII Emil was born in the Landshut District, Langenburg, Saskatchewan, in 1918. He enlisted in the Army on June 9, 1942 as an instructor in motorcycle and was discharged on July 9, 1944, due to an injury. He married Isabel and they had one daughter. He made his home in Brandon, Manitoba. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-45 War Medal.
