The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 375 STEFFENSON, Allan Henry WWII Allan was born near Le Roy, Saskatchewan, on May 3, 1922. In 1941, he and his brother, Hardy, were called in the Army at the same time. Allan was posted from Cape Breton Island to Vancouver Island and then went overseas on the ship Amsterdam arriving in Scotland and serving with the Regina Rifles 3rd Division as a gunner. He was stationed in England and fought the Germans in Belgium, France and Germany. He was in a barn in Emden, Germany, when the war was over and he did guard duty in Utrecht, Holland. After returning on the ship Queen Elizabeth and onto Ontario by train, he signed up to go fight the Japanese but the war with them was soon over so he didn’t go. He returned to Le Roy in early 1946 and farmed for many years, first at Le Roy, then Buchanan, and eventually moving to Yorkton, where he worked several years as a night auditor in a hotel. He had four children. Allan passed away on April 14, 2001. STEPTOE, Sydney Thomas WWI Sydney was born in Lewisham, Kent, England, on August 18, 1895. He joined the Canadian Army Overseas Expeditionary Force on March 10, 1916 and was killed in action on August 20, 1917 at Hill 70, Vimy, France. He is commemorated on Vimy Memorial north of Arras, Pas-de-Calais for 11,000 Canadian soldiers with no known grave. Sydney’s name is on monuments at Humbolt, Viscount, Saskatchewan, and in Regina near Waskcana Lake at the Parliament Building. STOCK, Rudolph WWI & WWII Rudolph was born in London, England, on March 4, 1893 and came to Canada in 1923. He farmed with his brother in the Bestville District of Saskatchewan, and joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in 1915 and returned to England as a Bren Gunner, serving there and in France and Europe. He was at Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and Ypres. Near the end of WWI, he transferred to the Air Force and served as a navigator and gunner. He enlisted in 1939 and served as a training officer in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. He married Violet Robinson in 1918 in West Hendon, England, and returned to the Bestville District, where he farmed until his passing in 1974. Rudolph and Violet raised four children. STEWART, Robert Henry WWII Robert was born in McAuley, Manitoba, on November 4, 1920. He attended school at Old Welwyn and Park Plain. In 1942, he joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles at Nanaimo, British Columbia, and served in Jamaica, England, France, Holland, and Germany and was discharged in 1946. He married Lorette Cadieux in 1966 and worked at the PFRA until his retirement in 1981 after 24 years of service. Bob and Lorette both enjoyed traveling and were both Legion auxiliary members of the Welwyn Branch #112 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
