The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 353 SCHAPPERT, Ernest R. A. WWII Ernest was born in Marchwell, Saskatchewan, on February 19, 1921. He enlisted with the 3rd LA/A Regiment on May 8, 1942 and took his training in Camrose, Alberta, before being transferred to Hazelmere, England, in November 1942. In January 1943, he joined his regiment and served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He left Germany after serving from 1944-46, and served with the 3rd Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, 2nd Division RCA, and was discharged on June 6, 1946 in Regina as a Lance Bomber. He retired and lives in Scarboro, Ontario. Ernest received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the France/Germany Star, and the Defence Medal. In 1946, he married Joan in Sussex, England, and they came back to Canada to settle in Toronto and raise four children. SCHAPPERT, Lloyd WWII Lloyd was born in Marchwell, Saskatchewan, in 1921. He joined the 9th Field Ambulance on August 14, 1942 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy (September 1943March 1945), France, Germany (March 1945-July 1945), and the Occupation Army until May 1946. Lloyd was part of the liberation of Holland in 1945 and returned to Canada. He married Albertha in 1948, who he met there, and they returned to Marchwell to farm on land bought with the Veterans’ Land Act and raised a family of eight and had seven foster children staying with them. Lloyd loved curling and always lent a helping hand. He taught his children orals, values and the love and trust of God. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 War Medal, the Italy Star, the France/Germany Star, and the 1939-45 Star. Lloyd passed away on November 13, 1999. SHAPPERT (PATTERSON), Olive Kathleen WWII Olive joined the CWAC on November 6, 1943. She married Robert Schappert during military training and retired to Langenburg, Saskatchewan, after her discharge on November 1, 1945. SCHAPPERT, Melvin WWII Melvin joined the 22nd Field Company Engineers, RCE on June 8, 1942 and served in Belgium and England. He went overseas in July 1944 and was reallocated to the infantry and posted to the South Saskatchewan Regiment in Belgium and was wounded and repatriated to England for hospital and convalescence. The war was over before he got out of hospital. He was discharged on June 7, 1946 and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the France/Germany Star, and the 1939-45 War Medal. He married Trudy in 1949 and they raised two children. Melvin lives in Vernon, British Columbia.
