The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 323 PORTER, Jack WWII Jack was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, in 1908. He joined the 13th Field Regiment RCA 44th and 78th Battery and landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and had to jump off a landing craft into 1012 feet of water, as they couldn’t get the craft any closer to the Juno shore because of the obstacles and mines that the Germans had planted in the water. Jack was a signaller and had to lay telephone lines and set up radio communications systems, always being in the front lines regardless of weather or dangerous conditions. It was during this time that Jack was captured while his crew of five were laying out telephone lines that the Germans just popped up from nowhere and took them prisoners, but shot the chap that was helping Jack roll out the spool of wire, the poor chap only lived for about four hours. The Germans were waiting until dark and ordered Jack and his crew to follow them, marching for two hours to camp spending eight months in different camps. They were liberated by General Patton and he went to England and was hospitalized for one month and then went home to Canada. Jack had been a member of the Kinistino Branch #129 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 50 years before he passed away in 1995. PORTER, Patrick Richard SPECIAL AREA DUTY Patrick was born in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, in 1969. He joined the 3rd Commando Royal Canadian Regiment Airborne #2 Combat Engineer Group doing peacekeeping in Cyprus. POWERS, Duane WWII Duane was born in Marsden, Saskatchewan, in 1921. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in October 1941 and served in England as a pilot with the 428th Bomber Squadron and completed one operational tour. At war’s end, he served with the Occupational Air Force and was discharged on July 2, 1946 and married and farmed. Duane now resides in Lloydminster, Alberta. PORTER, Richard James WWII Richard was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, in 1919. He joined the RCA 44th Battery serving in Canada, England and Europe. He was a D-Day Veteran a Life Member of the Kinistino Branch #129 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 63 years. Richard passed away in 2008.
