The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 303 NURSE, George Nelson WWI and WWII George was born in Peterborough, Ontario, in 1893. He joined the 28th Northwest Battalion CEF on December 2, 1914 in Wapella, Saskatchewan, and served in England, France and Belgium and was badly wounded in Ypres, France, and was in a POW Camp. George and two soldiers escaped and was discharged on January 15, 1919. In WWII, he enlisted in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, on September 14, 1939 with the 113 Field Battery and was a Battalion Sergeant Major but was unable to go overseas because of injuries from WWI. He was dispatched to work for the Department of Transport Civil Aviation of Canada. He received the following medals: the DSO, the DSC, the DSCM and the VSM and ribbons. He married twice and had five children from each marriage. George passed away on August 6, 1979 and is buried at Soldiers Plot Riverside Memorial Gardens, Regina. He was a Life Member of Legion Branch #1, DVA and Anavets, Regina. NYGAARD, Harold WWII Harold was born in Holbein, Saskatchewan, in 1922. He joined the South Saskatchewan Regiment in 1942 and was wounded and came home before the war ended. He was discharged in 1945. He married June Von Bieker in 1948 at Prince George and they raised six children. Harold worked at the sawmills and passed away on September 11, 2007. OFF, John WWII John was born in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, on December 4, 1917. He joined the Winnipeg Light Infantry on June 9, 1942, serving in Canada and was discharged on February 15, 1946. He came back to the farm after his discharge and never married. He was a person always willing to help anyone. During the war he trained with the Canadian Forces in the west coast area but never reached active service because the war ended. John passed away in May 1985. NYQUIST, John Frederick WWII John was born in Ruthilda, Saskatchewan, on May 26, 1922. He joined the RCC Signals on November 2, 1942, serving in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Europe, and was discharged in February 1946. He is a member of the Herschel Branch #7 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
