The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 297 NELSON, Thomas Harvey WWII Thomas was born in Watson, Saskatchewan, on August 25, 1915. He moved to Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, as a young boy where he lived with his aunt and uncle on their dairy farm. In 1941, he married Annette Giasson and on August 15, 1942, he enlisted in Regina in the RCASC and completed his basic training. He advanced at A20 CASCTC at Red Deer, Alberta, as a qualified motor mechanic and driver and embarked overseas on December 27, 1943 as reinforcement for the RCASC and then went to Italy on February 17, 1944 with the 41st Canadian General Transport as a Bren Gunner and served in Italy, Africa and England. After his discharge, he returned to Shaunavon, where he was employed by the Saskatchewan Coop Creamery and later took up farming until his death in October 1979. NESS, Julian Bernard WWII Julian was born in Barnsville, Minnesota, USA, on August 8, 1912. He enlisted in the Army on October 9, 1942, training as a winch operator-expert carbine and then winch operator instructor serving in the southern Philippines. He received the American Theatre Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal as well as the good conduct and Victory Medals. He was discharged in January 1946 and was a member of the South Saskatchewan Branch #306 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 16 years until his death on July 11, 1979. NEWSTEAD, Gordon WWII Gordon was born in 1918 at Balcarres and grew up on the family farm. He joined the RCA Saskatchewan Horse Regiment in 1942, and in 1944 he married Dorothy in Surrey, England, while he was serving with the Tank Corps. In 1946, Dorothy came to Canada with infant son, Wayne, and Gordon arrived three weeks later on the King George. They resided at Abernethy, Arborfield, before moving to Carrot River in 1953 with Wayne, Brent and Maureen. Gordon farmed and also worked for the Saskatchewan Timber Board. He passed away suddenly in 1973. Dorothy remained on the farm until 1998 when she became a resident in a Special Care Home in Carrot River. She passed away in 2002. NEUMIER, Lawrence WWII Lawrence was born in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, on August 8, 1917. He joined the RCA (Gunner) on November 29, 1942, serving in Canada and the Aleutian Islands and was discharged on March 14, 1946. After he returned to the farm, he married Bernice in 1944 and raised a family of seven and farmed until his retirement in 1979. He loved rodeos, horses, playing cards, camping, fishing and a good joke. Lawrence passed away on February 7, 1996.
