The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 295 NELMS, Edward James WWII Edward, son of Ernest and Elisa Nelms, was born in Kincardine, Ontario, on August 18, 1920. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and trained at various bases in Saskatchewan and Manitoba and left for overseas on September 27, 1941 for more training in England and Scotland. He was killed on June 15, 1942 at age 22, and was with the #19 Operational Training Unit flying a Whitney aircraft carrying practice bombs when it crashed in heavy fog into a hilltop in Morayshire, Scotland. Nelms Lake in northern Saskatchewan is named in his memory. Edward had married Sylvia Smart of Vandura in 1940 and had a son, James, born on June 15, 1941. NELSON, Alick L. WWII Alick was born in Macklin, Saskatchewan, in 1912. He joined the RCASC 1st Division, RCASC 5th Division, Supply Troops on January 27, 1943 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe, and was discharged on March 21, 1946, but stayed in Germany for a while to help transport troops and supplies. When he returned home, he purchased land through the Veterans’ Land Act and married Virginia in 1951 and raised a family. He retired to Russell, Manitoba. Alick received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 Medal, the Defence Medal, the France/Germany Medal, the Volunteer Star and the Battle of Britain Medal. NELSON, Olvf M. WWII Olvf was born in Kinistino, Saskatchewan, in 1918. He enlisted on February 2, 1942 with the RCEME in Prince George, British Columbia, and the RCA Victoria Rifles, RCASC in Halifax, Nova Scotia, serving as a truck driver in Canada and was discharged on November 25, 1945. He is a member of the Kinistino Branch #129 of The Royal Canadian Legion for eight years. NELSON, George J. WWII George was born in Kinistino, Saskatchewan, in 1922. He enlisted with the Queen’s Own Rifles #2 3rd Division in 1943 and served in Canada, England, France and the Aleutian Islands. He was wounded on August 10, 1944 and was discharged in 1945. George is a Life Member of the Snowden Branch #205 of The Royal Canadian Legion since 1945.
