The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 273 MEDDINS, Ivor WWII Ivor was born in North Wales, UK. He enlisted in the 10th Field Signals on June 14, 1941, at age 21, and served in Canada, England, Italy, Holland and Belgium, and was discharged on January 9, 1946. He received the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star and the Italy Star. Ivor passed away in 2004 and had been a member of the Young-Zelma Branch #358 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 54 years. MERKEL, Lloyd Melvin WWII Lloyd was born in Spring Valley, Saskatchewan, on January 1, 1919. He joined the South Saskatchewan Regiment on February 8, 1940 to May 7, 1941 and then transferred to the Air Force on May 13, 1941 to May 15, 1946, serving in Canada, England and the High Seas on many ships. He tried air crew for some time, then went into administration and was posted to St. John’s and Quebec to organize a repair depot and then posted to 11 movement groups, Halifax, Nova Scotia, to work on troop transports and made 25 - 30 round trips across the Atlantic, looking after troops, war brides, prisoners of war, the sick and wounded until his discharge. Lloyd has been a member of the Broadview Branch #148 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 48 years. MILLER, Andrew P. WWII Andrew joined the Ghunka Rifles, Captain RCAAC. He passed away on November 27, 1982. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion. MERRIMAN, John William WWII John was born in Des Moines, Iowa, USA, in 1919 and came to Canada in May 1927 and enlisted in the Army in Saskatoon on February 25, 1942 and took some basic training in Camrose, Alberta and then in Kingston, Ontario and was in England before Christmas of 1942 with the Signal Corps. He then went to Naples, Italy in 1943 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom and the Central Mediterranean area and was discharged in Regina on March 27, 1946. He married in June, 1946 and farmed and raised a family. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal of Britain and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. John currently lives in Keremeos, British Columbia, and enjoys pickling and canning fruits off his trees and is active doing meals on wheels to shut-ins and driving seniors to doctor appointments. John became a member of the Christopher Lake Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion in 1946.
