The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 271 McRAE, Hartwell Harold WWI Hartwell was born on February 18, 1895 in Quebec, to William and Sarah, and moved with the family to Ridgedale, Saskatchewan, in 1920. He went overseas and returned to Ridgedale to file for a homestead. He married Eliza Arnold in 1929 and they raised five children. He cleared land, hauled wood and custom threshed crops. Hartwell passed away suddenly on September 6, 1978. McRAE, William Gordon WWII William, son of Christopher and Margaret, was born on June 15, 1915 on a farm near Parkman, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and graduated as a pilot and instructed trainees at Hagerville, Ontario, for two years until he was posted to Coastal Command in the Bahamas. He was then posted to Bomber Command in Burma and he and his crew flew from Canada via Gander, Newfoundland, to England and then on to India. On March 26, 1945, the Japanese shot down his plane over the Indian Ocean and his body was never recovered. His name is inscribed on the Singapore War Memorial, Malaya. McRae Bay in the north-east corner of Wolliston Lake in northern Saskatchewan is named in his honour. MECKLER, Peter WWII Peter was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan, on August 13, 1925. He enlisted with the Regina Rifles on May 5, 1944 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Continental Europe. He was discharged on May 31, 1946. Peter passed away on July 13, 1995 and had been a member of the Merritt Branch #96 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 23 years. McRITCHIE, Oliver WWII Oliver was born in Crystal City, Manitoba, on November 12, 1920. He came with his family in 1933 to the Blue Spruce District and was a pulpwood contractor. He joined the 44th Field Battery and served overseas for threeand-a-half years. He moved to Alberta and retired in 1985.
