The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 247 MACHNAIK, Walter M. WWII Walter was born in Dysart, Saskatchewan, in 1920. He saw active duty with the PAV Calgary Highlanders in Canada, England, France, Belgium and Holland. He was wounded twice and spent several months in hospital in England. During one of his leaves, Walter went to Dundee, Scotland, where he married Jean Duffin. He returned home in January 1946, with Jean joining him in July of that year. They farmed in Dysart for 12 years and in 1959 they purchased in Welwyn and retired in 1976. Walter and Jean raised five children: Terry, June, Bob, Rick and Bill. He passed away on October 4, 2001. He received the 1939-45 Star, the France/Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the Holland Thank-You Medal. He was a member of the Welwyn Branch #112 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 47 years. MACK, Walter P. WWII Walter was born in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, on November 10, 1917. He joined the Army as a gunner in September 1940, but on August 28, 1941, he became ill with scarlet fever and lost all of his hair. Later in November, he was stricken with Typhus Fever and was very ill until December 1944. He was discharged on compassionate grounds. He returned home and worked at various jobs, including operating a couple of cafes. He married Ellie and they raised five children. In 1967, he started Walter’s Small Engine and Repair and continued until 1975, when he suffered a stroke that left him with speech problems and another that left him partly paralysed. He recovered and then in 1977, he suffered another stroke that left him completely paralyzed. Walter passed away in Langenburg on June 29, 1978. MACKLEM, Elmer WWII Elmer joined the Canadian Forestry in August 1940 and served in Canada and Scotland until 1942. He transferred to the Armoured Corps (Calgary Tanks) from July 1943 until the end of the war and was discharged in September 1945. MacKENZIE, Raymond WWII Raymond was born in 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in October 1942 and was stationed in Canada and received his discharge in May 1946. He came back to North Portal, Saskatchewan, where he worked at Canada Customs and farmed. He passed away in 1995 and is buried in the North Portal Cemetery.
